History of the founding of the cemetery in the Miussa area
At the end of the 18th century, a plague epidemic was recorded in Moscow. Due to the high mortality rate of the population, several cemeteries were organized simultaneously in different areas of the city. Among them: Vagankovskoye, Vvedenskoye, Kalitnikovskoye, Danilovskoye, Rogozhskoye and Miusskoye. The last of them got its name from the area called Miussa. On the modern map of the capital, the Miusskoe cemetery stretches along Sushchevsky Val, on the other two sides it borders on Dvintsev Street and Savelovsky Proezd. Nowadays, the area of the ancient necropolis is only about 5 hectares. The area is small, but quite well-groomed. Clean-up days are regularly held at the cemetery, trees are crowned and garbage is removed.
Necropolis, miraculously remaining on the city map
Initially, the Miusskoe cemetery in Moscow was created for the burial of people who died from the Black Death. After the end of the plague epidemic, mainly merchants, townspeople and artisans were buried here. In 1823, a temple in the Empire style was erected on the territory of the cemetery. Most of the funds needed for construction were allocated by the merchant and philanthropist I.P. Kozhevnikov. The temple was consecrated in the name of the Saints Faith, Hope, Love and their mother Sophia.
After 12 years, the church was expanded by adding two chapels at the expense of warrant officer A. A. Neronova. Over the entire history of its existence, the Miusskoe cemetery was intended to be disbanded several times, that is, liquidated. Several times such proposals were considered by officials and representatives of the clergy. In 1922, the temple was closed, “beheaded” and significantly rebuilt. For many years, a production workshop was located in its building. The necropolis was “cut down” several times, shifting the boundaries.
The temple was returned to believers, restored and re-consecrated only in 1990. Today, services are held there, and the territory of the ancient cemetery is open to the public every day. A number of famous burials have been preserved to this day in the ancient necropolis. Famous public figures, scientists, writers and artists found their final refuge here. It was at the Mius necropolis that the following were buried: science fiction writer Kir Bulychev and animator director Alexander Tatarsky. In the same cemetery there are the graves of such outstanding people as: P. E. Argiropulo (revolutionary), V. V. Vikhrov (actor), V. S. Golitsyn, N. G. Lvova (poetess), V. P. Shaboldin and many others.
