Akathist to the Life-Giving Cross is an ode of praise to the strength of all Orthodox people who were able to defend their faith in the Lord.

Akathist to the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord

And only three hundred years later, Emperor Constantine the Great issued a decree...

It should be noted that the icon of the Peschanskaya Mother of God (or as it is also called) is revered as a miraculous image by almost every Orthodox Christian.

The very appearance of the divine face occurred in 1754, when the Belgorod bishop Joasaph saw her image in his dream. The miraculous image of the Mother of God that appeared complained that she was simply thrown away and found herself among a pile of garbage. Somewhat later, the bishop saw the same icon, but in one of the Izyum churches. Some time later, in the place where the face was located, the Orthodox Church of the Sand Icon of the Queen of Heaven was built.

Akathists in Orthodoxy

First of all, you need to understand what an akathist is and when it is read. In the tradition of Orthodox Christian worship there are several types of prayer sequences. The canons are considered the most ancient and traditional of them. In the 19th and 20th centuries, other types of glorifying chants - akathists - became widespread.

Akathist is usually called a special poetic form, a song of praise in honor of Jesus, the Mother of God or saints. In their form and essence, these chants are very close to the more ancient kontakia.

Each akathist includes 25 songs: the main kontakion, followed by 12 kontakia are arranged in succession(songs of praise), alternating with 12 ikos (extensive songs). All songs are arranged in order of letters in the Greek alphabet. The first kontakion and all ikos end with the refrain “Rejoice!”, and all kontakia end with the refrain “Alleluia.” Traditionally, the last kontakion is addressed to the one to whom the entire hymn is dedicated, and is read three times in a row.

The word “akathist” translated from ancient Greek means “unsaddled singing.” This solemn chant can only be performed while standing.

When to read

These solemn hymns do not fall into the category of obligatory liturgical rites. The only exception is the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos “To the Chosen Voivode...”

You can turn to the Mother of God and the saints of God, calling for help in the following situations:

  1. You should pronounce an ode of praise in those moments when your soul is very heavy. This sacred song will help fill the soul with joy and harmony.
  2. You can pray, relying on the help of saints in worldly affairs.
  3. If doubts creep into your soul, and there is no opportunity to consult with a cleric, you can read a hymn of praise yourself. This will help you cast aside doubts and gain confidence in yourself and in God’s help.
  4. By reading the akathist, you can heal physical and mental illnesses. It is very important to firmly believe in the help of Heaven.

Reading at home

Women often ask whether it is possible to read akathists during critical days. There are no prohibitions on this topic and you can without a doubt turn to Heaven if a spiritual need arises.

Reading order

During home reading, the beginning and ending of prayers are normal. You can read an akathist or canon after morning or evening rules or before the prayer “It is worthy to eat...”.

When reading separately from morning or evening prayer, a certain sequence of prayers is first said, then Psalm 50 and the Creed are read.

Reading the akathist himself happens in a certain sequence. Kontakion 13 is repeated three times in a row, immediately followed by ikos 1, followed by 1 kontakion.

At the conclusion of the reading, certain prayers are offered. You can find their texts and sequence in any prayer book.

As you read, you may come across some generally accepted Orthodox literature abbreviations:

  1. If it is written “Glory:” or “Trinity:”, you should say “Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
  2. Instead of the words “And now” or “Theotokos” the words “And now and ever and unto ages of ages” are pronounced. Amen".
  3. The abbreviation “Glory, and now:” is usually understood as a sequential combination of these two exclamations.

Which chants to choose for everyday needs

In every everyday need (for every need) you can resort to the help of certain Saints or the Icon of the Mother of God.

Appeals to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Akathists to various saints

There is a list of prayer chants that allow you to turn to the saints in every need and everyday sorrow:

IN Orthodox tradition accepted Akathist to the Guardian Angel read on Mondays. Why this particular day was chosen is not known to everyone. In the Church, the first day of the week is considered the day of the Angel. Turning to your guardian angel on this particular day will help you live safely throughout the week.

This is not a complete list of ceremonies church hymns. If on a holiday a canon and an akathist are read for the same holiday or icon, the reading of the akathist should begin after the sixth song of the canon instead of the kontakion and ikos given there.

Akathist They call a song of praise in honor of the Savior, the Mother of God, saints or any holidays (events).

Any akathist consists of 25 songs (in accordance with the Greek alphabet). Thirteen of them are called kontakia (songs of praise), and twelve are called ikoses (extensive songs), which explain the essence of the festive event. It is because of this that ikos is never read independently, but only after reading the kontakion. All ikos, with rare exceptions, end with the word “Rejoice,” and at the end of kontakia you can always hear “hallelujah,” which means “praise God.” After the reading of the kontakion there is always an ikos, which, as a rule, is divided into two parts. The last kontakion is considered an appeal to the one to whom the akathist is dedicated. By tradition, it is repeated three times in a row. The akathist is always followed by reading a prayer.

Akathists are not a statutory, obligatory liturgical rite. At services in churches, only the Akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos “To the Chosen Voivode...” is necessarily read on the Saturday of Praise of the Most Holy Theotokos, during the fifth week of Great Lent. In modern practice during Great Lent, the Akathist of the Passion of the Lord is also used in the rite of Passion, which is served on Sunday evenings in the 2nd-5th weeks of Great Lent.

Akathists in honor of holidays are sometimes read at Matins of a festive service or at a prayer service on the very day of the holiday. In general, at prayer services they often resort to reading akathists. This is how the order of reading the Paraklisis of the Mother of God developed, where at the prayer service after the sixth song of the canon, an akathist to the Mother of God (or to her icons) is read.

Calling upon the holy saints of God to help with everyday needs, akathists are read to them, to the icons of the Mother of God.

There are no special instructions in the Charter for reading akathists in church and during cell (home) prayer. But from general church practice a rule can be derived: During Great Lent it is not customary to read akathists , except for the Akathist to the Mother of God on the 5th week (on Saturday) and the Akathist to the Passion of Christ. On all other days of the year, reading akathists is permitted.

The akathist itself has a special sequence. So the 13th kontakion is read three times, and immediately after it the first ikos is repeated again, after which the first kontakion is read. At the end of the akathist, a prayer is read.

The order of reading akathists.

Reading akathists separately from the morning and evening prayer rules.

Through the prayers of the saints, our fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us. Amen.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (three times, with sign of the cross and bows from the waist).

Most Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Master, forgive our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Thy name's sake.

Lord have mercy (three times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done as it is in Heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.

Lord have mercy (12 times).

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Come, let us worship our King God (bow).

Come, let us worship and fall down to Christ our King God (bow).

Come, let us bow and fall before Christ Himself, the King and our God (bow).

Psalm 50.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your great mercy, and according to the multitude of Your mercies, cleanse my iniquity. Above all, wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I know my iniquity and bear away my sin before me. I have sinned against You alone, and I have created evil before You, so that You may be justified in Your words and overcome, never judge You. Behold, I was conceived in iniquity, and my mother gave birth to me in sins. Behold, Thou hast loved the truth, Thou hast revealed to me Thy unknown and secret wisdom. Sprinkle me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Give joy and gladness to my hearing; humble bones will rejoice. Turn Your face away from my sins, and cleanse all my iniquities. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a right spirit in my womb. Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit away from me. Reward me with the joy of Your salvation, and strengthen me with the Master’s Spirit. I will teach the wicked Your way, and the wicked will turn to You. Deliver me from bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation; my tongue will rejoice in Your righteousness. Lord, open my mouth, and my mouth will declare Your praise. As if you had wanted sacrifices, you would have given burnt offerings, but you would not have been pleased. The sacrifice to God is a broken spirit, a contrite and humble heart, God will not despise. Bless Zion, O Lord, with Your favor, and may the walls of Jerusalem be built. Then you will be pleased with the sacrifice of righteousness, the wave offering and the burnt offering, then they will lay the bullock on Your altar.

Symbol of faith

I believe in One God, the Father, Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, visible to all and invisible. And in the One Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Only Begotten, Who was born of the Father before all ages; Light from Light, true God from true God, born, uncreated, consubstantial with the Father, to Whom all things were. For our sake, man and our salvation came down from heaven and became incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became human. She was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered and was buried. And he rose again on the third day according to the Scriptures. And ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of the Father. And again the coming one will be judged with glory by the living and the dead, His Kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Life-Giving One, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who spoke the prophets. Into one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the remission of sins. I hope for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the next century. Amen.

Then the akathist (read after the 6th song of the canon).

Upon completion of the reading of the canon - a prayer to the Lord Jesus Christ or the Mother of God, a saint - according to the meaning of the akathist. Then:

It is worthy to eat, as you truly bless Theotokos, Ever-Blessed and Most Immaculate and Mother of Our God. Most honorable Cherub and the most glorious without comparison, the Seraphim, who without corruption gave birth to God the Word, the real Mother of God, we magnify Thee.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Lord have mercy (three times).

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Your Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers, the saint (the name of the saint to whom the akathist was read, if to the Lord or the Mother of God, then we say nothing) and all the saints , have mercy and save me, a sinner, for Good and Lover of Humanity. Amen.

If to the Cross - by the power of the Honest and Life-giving Cross

If Angels - Honest Heavenly Forces Ethereal

1. The property of prayer is “directional”.

Any prayer on the one hand is directed to God or His saints, and on the other hand it is directed at the prayer book itself or at other people or deeds.

When we ask ourselves: peace of mind, physical health and strength to endure everything safely, then this prayer is directed at the one praying, i.e. on yourself.

When we pray for the health and salvation of other people, this prayer is directed at other people.

When we pray about matters (personal, company, other people’s affairs), the road, the sick..., then this is a prayer that is aimed at business.

You need to understand that prayer for yourself (with requests for peace of mind, physical health and strength to endure everything safely) has a creative property that strengthens the prayer book.
Prayer for yourself is similar to income, salary, and the property that you acquire for yourself.

Prayers for other people and for deeds have the ability to move mountains, help family and friends at a distance, protect them, but they have a temporary powerful effect on the prayer booker himself. negative impact. A prayer book, as it were, temporarily gives up your spiritual, mental and physical strength if, for example, you pray for your son or daughter to successfully pass an exam.
Prayer for other people or for your own affairs or the affairs of other people is similar to expenses, to the property that you give away by giving alms.

Comment. If every day we try to give alms (praying for other people and about deeds) more than we receive (praying for ourselves), then we find ourselves in a situation where there is no more property, salary, strength to restrain our irritation and anger, no strength to stand up for prayer or fast and go to Temple. The danger of ending up in the hospital with physical or mental illness, being thrown out of work or losing your family is approaching...

The more sins those people for whom we pray have (most often our problems begin from our sins) or the more voluminous the matters about which we turn to God, the faster the prayer book’s strength runs out.

If we decide to read an akathist or psalter about someone or something for 40 days, then the Grace of God can come to the aid of the prayer book and support him. A sharp deterioration in well-being may occur after finishing the prayers. It is important to learn to understand the extent of your strengths and capabilities and balance them with your desires, so as not to end up in the hospital.

Comment. We often say petitions in prayers taken from standard, typical prayers written by someone, sometime and for something. Unfortunately, the authors of many prayers after the akathist and other prayers did not leave descriptions of what exactly we will receive if we read their prayer. You can get the answer to the question of where the power of the akathist will be directed if you first look at the standard prayer after the akathist and highlight the main petitions and verbs that are used in it. It often happens that we are asked to pray for something at the discretion of the author of the prayer. It's like standing in line and asking: give me the same thing as everyone else and more.

What do you want more of? I don’t know what, just more.

To direct the power of the akathist to our petition, we must first think about why we are reading the akathist: we pray for ourselves or for others or for deeds. It is better to write down the prayer with your petitions. Show your prayer to your confessor, who will correct it if anything is wrong. Then the entire akathist will go exactly to what you need, and not to what will be on average in the region and at the same time for me. Every word of prayer has weight and the one who asks receives what he asks for. The simplest prayer can be made up of simplest requests.

2. The property of prayer is “balance.”
The property of balance reflects the maintenance of a balance (or its violation) between the volume of prayers for oneself and the volume of prayers for others (and for deeds).

If you remember that prayer directed at yourself has the ability to strengthen the mental and physical strength of the person praying, to bring peace and tranquility to the soul, and prayer for other people and for deeds can waste your strength, then you just have to maintain balance in your prayers. When praying for yourself, try to give it a higher priority. And learning to feel the balance between expenses and income, learning to regulate when to add prayers for yourself, and when you can add prayers for someone else - this is a necessary, essential skill of self-control for a competent prayer book.

Why is it important to stand up for yourself? more prayers, what's up? Why is it necessary to pray for yourself more than for other people?

Because the Monk Seraphim of Sarov teaches: “Save yourself, and thousands around you will be saved.”

Because praying for other people means shedding blood. Prayer for others will require the person praying to expend his strength, health, time, nerves, etc. It is good to pray for the health of others, but the one who begs will pay. You need to be prepared for this. Prayer for yourself will help you strengthen yourself in the upcoming labors.

Usually, when we pray for other people and ask them for something, we get drawn into such prayer. We feel in our hearts a good disposition towards those for whom we pray. It is good to pray that your son will serve his military service safely or that your child will study successfully, graduate from school and enter a university, etc. A very wide variety of petitions for others and for their affairs and problems. To perform such prayers, the prayer book needs to have spiritual strength and not only strength, but also experience when to stop. But the strength goes away very quickly, especially if there is no prayer for oneself or one prays little for oneself, forgetting that it is necessary or thinking that there is no point in praying for oneself: God knows what I need

What happens when we upset the balance of prayers for ourselves and prayers for other people and deeds (when the prayer book either does not pray much or at all for himself, but rather prays more for his own or other people’s deeds, or for other people for health or peace)?

1 TO When a prayer book is a novice person, he simply loses prayer, gets out of the usual regime of daily reading of morning and evening prayers. And he will be able to return to prayer after some time (in a day, a week, a month). Look how much I've gotten myself into trouble. This phenomenon is similar to how an electrical fuse trips, opening the network and protecting against a short circuit. The prayer is temporarily lost and the person does not end up in the hospital.

2. In the case when the prayer book is a trained and persistent person, then the situation around the consequences of his prayers becomes aggravated.

Physical health can gradually or sharply deteriorate, with possible options ranging from mild illness to fractures, strokes or heart attacks. I wish I could have noticed earlier that something was wrong and stopped.

It plays a role how many heavy ones (located in unrepentant sins) such a man of prayer is at the same time drawn to God.

Oh, what a difficult job it is, dragging a hippopotamus out of the swamp. And, if you have written down not one, but several difficult people at once in your memorial, then the end will come even faster.

3. When troubles and temptations haunt the prayer book at work, at home and on the street - this is the third degree of overload. The man simply took off his protective cover God's Grace and gave it to those for whom he prays. If there are any troubles and failures in some place, then they concern him specifically. If they throw a stone at the window of a trolleybus, then it is exactly where he is sitting. If a pack of stray dogs on the street would attack anyone, it would be him. If he gets into an accident in which almost no one was hurt, then he will definitely be among the victims.

4. The last stage of imbalance in prayer leads a person to the knowledge that we are preserved from sins by the Grace of God. Therefore, a person slips into previous sins or commits grave sins, without knowing how he managed to sin like that.

3. The property of prayer is “accumulation”.

Prayer accumulates when said for the same specific petition. Accumulation occurs when we turn to God in prayer at home and in Church, light candles and order a prayer service for this specific request, etc.
How did the saints accumulate prayer and how do we? The Monk Seraphim of Sarov wanted to see what exactly awaits us in the Kingdom of God and for seven days he incessantly prayed to God for this - he was raptured into heaven. If we take our time spent on prayer rule, then how long will we need to pray to accumulate such a volume of prayers as Father Seraphim?

3.1. The property of prayer is “concentration”.
Prayer can be concentrated when, after reading the akathist, we have only one petition, when this petition is extremely simple and specific. Such prayer is like a clenched fist.

3.1.1. The property of prayer is “prayer amplifiers.”
Prayer can be enhanced by:
- reading canons and akathists (have you ever thought about where the standard prayer is directed after the akathist?);
- reading the psalter;
- Church prayer;
- Church prayer ordered in several churches (monasteries);
- prayer by agreement;
- night prayer (23.00 - 6.00);
- prayer with bows (to the ground or from the waist);
- prayer with fasting;
- prayer for 40 days;
- prayer with alms;
- prayers with written petitions (orally, sometimes something can be missed or replaced, a written petition can seriously help), etc.

It must be remembered that reading amplifiers alone is not enough; it is important that prayers after them do not violate the property of “balance”. It’s not enough to say that every day I read 3 akathists or three canons; you need to realize where exactly the power of the akathist is directed. It’s good when you directed more than half of your prayers to yourself with petitions: “spiritual peace, bodily health and strength to endure everything safely” (St. Seraphim of Sarov, St. Ambrose of Optina).

3.2. The property of prayer is “dispersion.”
The power of prayer can be dissipated if:
- after reading the akathist there are more than 2 prayers (serious unambiguous petitions);
- the petition sounds in general (“may everything be fine” or “save and save from all evil”);
- today he asked with only words, tomorrow he slightly replaced the words or petitions (the prayer should be written down);
- other cases.

The dispersed power of prayer is like just one finger, because... Each of the 5 requests consumes power. Therefore, for one petition only 1/5 of the remaining petitions will remain.

4. The property of prayer is “sufficiency.”

Sufficiency is the result of the development of the property of accumulation. The prayers have accumulated and we have received what we ask for in prayer - this is already the property of sufficiency.

If we pray and do not receive what we ask for, then it may be:
- “we ask for bad things”;
- there was not enough volume of prayers;
- prayer dissipates.

“Some prayed and asked for it to rain, others asked for it not to rain, but it will be as God wills,” said the saint. Amrosy Optinsky. Yes, the fulfillment of our requests depends on God. “Will not God protect His chosen ones who cry out to Him day and night, although He is slow to protect them? I tell you that He will give them protection soon.”

Saint Basil the Great turned to God with a request to reveal how to serve Divine Liturgy and spent seven days in prayer. Having received a visit from God, he left us both the prayers and the sequence of the liturgy, as God revealed to him.

Therefore, if we really need something, then we should show persistence in prayer work, correctly directing the prayer, maintaining balance, concentrating on our petition (I recommend writing down your prayers with petitions) and, using certain amplifiers, we can be worthy of His help , His visits, His rewards.

It is no coincidence that there are petitions in the Church every day: - “for a peaceful Christian death”, “a good answer at the Last Judgment” - the time will come when the Church’s prayer and ours (we also stood in the Church at the service and prayed for this) will accumulate in some to the extent and, together with good deeds, will intercede for us.

5. The property of prayer is “timeliness.”
It is not enough for a person to simply be trained in prayer. The time at which the prayer is performed can have a decisive influence on the result of the prayer.
The first, well-known approach, when thunder struck and the man crossed himself, one person compared it to how you would grab a horse by the tail. The reaction of a horse, if you take it by the tail, is not difficult to predict. It is difficult to answer the question: will it be possible to have time to beg in the course of events that sore subject, because of which we had to pray so much. When all the worst things are already happening, it is difficult to predict the result of our prayer. This Reverend Silouan Athonsky sighed prayerfully and stopped the log that was rolling down the mountain towards the people. Or the Monk Seraphim Vyritsky prayed for a patient with a spine broken in two places, and he walked away from him on his own feet, without limping, as if he had not broken anything. The Venerable Stolnik Simeon stopped the war of one country against another.
When the thunder struck and the man began to cross himself, should he immediately call 01, 02, 03 or the Ministry of Emergency Situations? But this no longer applies to prayer. You need to be at a very high level of boldness before God in order to have time to rectify the situation with the help of your prayer. Although our contemporaries also managed to pray along the way. For example, when two people drove a car from abroad in the 90s and bandits stopped everyone, but they weren’t there. It turned out that one of them read the 90th Psalm all the way. It is unknown how we will be able to pray for someone or something in the course of what is happening with you. After all, requests in prayer are fulfilled by God...
The second approach to prayer time, as one person said, is to grab the horse by the mane, that is, to pray before everything begins. If you are going on a journey, then to grab the mane by the mane is to read the akathist to the Savior (to the Most Holy Theotokos, St. Nicholas or the saint to whom we are going on a pilgrimage) without the last prayer with a prayer for those traveling. Or serve a prayer service for travelers in the Temple. In a word, pave the way.
If you are planning to build a house or start a business, then an akathist with a prayer before the start of any good deed or a prayer service in the Temple (or on the foundation of a house, with sprinkling of holy water) - this will allow you to pray for the beginning of the business (construction, etc.).
The third approach to prayer time complements the second. If in the second approach a person prays for the beginning of his path, business, question and everything begins successfully and calmly, then one must remember that after some time the power of prayer will weaken. This means that the work started needs continued prayers for it. I have often observed the following effect in prayer: if you serve a regular prayer service before starting any work, then you feel help for 2 - 4 hours and the work moves itself from where it comes from, then everything returns to the previous rhythm of activity. If you conduct the same prayer service, but with an akathist (without the standard prayer after the akathist), then there is intense help for 24 hours, then a gradual decline occurs. It’s the same with prayer before business (dear), - we prayed for a while and everything goes smoothly. After some time, irritation comes inside or some kind of interference outside - these are the first signs that the good effect of help from above is ending and it’s time to pray for the matter again. Therefore, in order to last longer in prayer, we read akathists every day (see “amplifiers”, paragraph 3.1.1. on this page).

If you see signs that the work is stopping, then it means it’s time to start praying for this work (and for those who do it).

6. The property of prayer is “special requests”.

If you ask yourself to acquire any quality (patience, humility, love, etc.), then as a result you will not be given from above the ready-made quality itself, but situations in which this quality will be developed.

Explanation. The one asking for patience asks that in winter, on the night before an important event at work, he is urgently taken from home and driven 20 kilometers away (to friends for fishing, or the police on suspicion of something, etc.). Returning in the morning, having no strength, you need to overcome the fatigue of a sleepless night and begin very responsible work.

The one asking for humility asks that he be ridiculed in public, slandered, kicked under the table - in a word, humiliated to such an extent that the person deeply feels the extent of his humble position. All at his request for humility.

One who asks for love for other people will be honored to care for an old sick person who swears, lies, drinks, does not thank you, steals, hides a knife for you under the pillow, etc. The word "love" is like highest virtue requires not only patience and humility, but also self-reproach and dedication. You can substitute your specific request into this equation of requests in prayer. You already know that you will not receive a ready-made quality (virtue), but situations where it will be developed. This means that you already know almost all the circumstances of your future adventures from your foolish prayer. Like in a children's cartoon, when a kitten named Woof is told that a kitten with that name will face nothing but trouble in the yard. And the kitten replies that since they are already waiting for me, then I’ll go. Why are they waiting for him? This is already an inappropriate question. If we ask something from God, then we receive what we ask for, that is, we simply practice our prayers and wait until the power of prayer ends. It is important for me to explain to people experimenting with petitions that sometimes we ask for something that is not our daily bread. It is scary to ask God Zhivago for anything, because He will give it. You need to think three times before asking for special spiritual qualities. Before you pray, write down your prayer. Analyze what you have already received for your petitions and what you can get if you pray according to your recorded prayer. Remove everything that troubles your heart. After all, it is said that “the Lord gives prayer to those who pray.” Leave only those petitions that you like to pronounce in the face of God Almighty.

7. The property of prayer is “forming a connection between the prayer book and the one for whom they are praying.”

When reading prayers for someone and asking God for something for them, you should know that in order for what you ask to be fulfilled, God will send you.

Explanation. You pray for your grandson and ask that he be fed, put on shoes and clothed. Prepare to move to him and serve him in whatever you ask.

8. The property of prayer is “changing the state of the soul of the prayer book.”

If you asked for love for people, then you will often find yourself in situations where your heart will melt in sympathy from information about people who need any help you can.

If you ask for money, then the longing in your soul from an imaginary lack of money will drive your thoughts to go to work somewhere in the North, etc.

Explanation. If only the prayer book could look into his heart and understand what it is filled with.

It is important to understand how your desires that live in your heart affect your future and present.

It is commendable when a manager undertakes to help a subordinate reach his potential. It is even higher before God when a leader pays attention to his soul, his heart and realizes what motivates him, how he lives, what in his life changes (or does not change) for the better over time. Understanding oneself makes it possible to understand exactly in which direction the state of our soul changes from one prayer or another.

9. A dangerous property of prayer is “blindly copying someone else’s prayers.”
Often, repeating this or that prayer, we don’t think about who prayed that way and what he asks for himself or others. If you think that you can ignore this property, then you can try to pray, like St. Barsonuvius the Great, for the whole world. Or, like the Monk Silouan of Athos, for people to know the love of God through the Grace of God. Difficult?
Knowing the properties of prayer described above, you can fully understand the essence of your personal or other standard prayer in the prayer book. Asking simply because it is written so or because everyone does it is the same as standing in line and asking for something, no matter what, the same as everyone else and more. Do you need an average area? Then we will give you a lot of peace from our prayers, read after someone. You will need to assign the name of some experimenter.
For example, as an experimenter, the name of the natural scientist Lomonosov came to me with prayer. The surname is very deep in meaning and content. That’s what happened to me. If you want to learn from your mistakes with prayer, this gives me a double feeling. On the one hand, meeting such home naturalists almost every day, I treat them with respect. These are courageous people. On the other hand, they cause me some annoyance and irritation that they do not understand the basic elementary knowledge of prayer and what happens to them as a result of their own heartfelt petitions. "You don't know what you're asking for." This is due to a lack of attentiveness, conscientiousness and poor mastery of the teachings of the holy fathers Orthodox Church. The main thing is that you still look for how to pray correctly with the saints and God will reveal to you how and what. That's how it was with me.

10. The dangerous quality of prayer is “prayer in murmuring or prayer so that it will definitely happen as I want.”

As a rule, God in such cases meets the prayer book halfway.

The husband, in a state of resentment towards his wife, praying that he does not need her, loses his wife. An insurmountable gap arises between them.

A woman in a state of grumbling that God did not send her a second half, immediately receives a man who takes care of her. It is only later that it turns out that he cannot be a husband, and they cannot stand each other after a few days of living together.
It is correct if you add “but Thy Will be done” at the end of your petitions.

The main focus should be on your heart thoughts.It is dangerous to get up for prayer without preparing, in a state of murmuring against God, in the mood that everything must certainly be according to my will.

The centuries-old church culture stores in its treasures many genres of chants, among which the akathist occupies a special place.

Akathists have been translated into many languages: Greek, Romanian, Serbian, Polish, Czech and others.

Rules for reading the akathist to saints

What is an akathist? This is a song of praise, thanksgiving dedicated to God, His Mother, saints, angels, archangels.

Akathist is a song of praise, thanksgiving dedicated to God, His Mother, saints, angels, archangels

The song of praise includes 25 songs, divided into two groups:

  1. Kontakia - 13 works that embody in their lines summary a holiday or an ode of praise to a saint, its reading always ends with the praise of “Hallelujah”;
  2. Ikosy - 12 works that explain the essence of the festive event, always ending with the exclamation “Rejoice”.

Not every Christian understands how to read the akathist correctly.

Attention! Relaxation is made only for pregnant women and infirm people - they are allowed to read it while sitting, or, in extreme cases, lying down.

  1. Translated from ancient Greek it means “unsaddled singing.” Therefore, the solemn anthem is always performed in a standing position.
  2. With the blessing of the priest, it can be read both within the walls of the temple and at home.
  3. Before pronouncing it, pre-initial prayers are read; they are said before the main prayers begin.
  4. After reading them, an akathist and a prayer are read.
Important! Solemn hymns are allowed to be offered on any day except Lenten days.

Why do they read

The Akathist to the Queen of Heaven consists of 25 stanzas arranged in a certain order. It is sung only once - on Saturday of the fifth week of Lent.

Usually the Mother of God is asked:

  • about the granting of healing in serious illnesses;
  • about getting rid of drug addiction and alcoholism;
  • about assistance in raising children;
  • about obstetrics;
  • about victory over enemies and other important moments of earthly life.

The Akathist to the Queen of Heaven is sung only once - on Saturday of the fifth week of Lent

The song of praise to God's saints reads:

  • for all kinds of sorrows and needs;
  • when moving to a new home;
  • about deliverance from sinful scourge;
  • in difficult financial situations;
  • in other difficult life circumstances.

Some Orthodox akathists:

Important! Before reading the akathist for the first time on your own, it is recommended to listen to it in church or on audio recording. This will make it clear: with what intonation the hymn is pronounced, where to put the emphasis correctly, what volume and sound the chant should have.

The power of the akathist

  • an ode of praise is sung at those moments when the soul of the prayer book is very heavy, thereby the sacred song fills it with joy, happiness and harmony;
  • with independent regular reading, the prayer book fully understands the whole essence of existence and what the faith of the Lord consists of;
  • if the reader doubts something and he does not have the opportunity to consult with the clergy, then after performing a song of praise, the doubts will disappear by themselves and the person will become a Christian confident in himself and his abilities;
  • An akathist can heal both physical and spiritual ailments - the main thing is to have a strong faith in help from Heaven.

Water-blessing prayer with akathist

A prayer service is a special service in which they beg Heaven to send mercy to the prayer book and offer thanks for the requested benefits received.

Water Blessing Prayer Service

Attention! Those prayers that include the rite of blessing water are called water-blessings. At the end of it, an akathist is read to the Heavenly Father, the Mother of God, saints, archangels, and angels.

Water is blessed with a special rite:

  1. For the blessing of water, a bowl filled with water, a Crucifix and the Gospel are placed on the table in the middle of the temple, and candles are lit.
  2. The cleric begins reading psalms and troparia, baptism and censing of water are performed.
  3. At the end of the prayer service, those parishioners who ordered his service receive holy water to drink with faith and prayer, at the same time asking God for forgiveness of sins and deliverance from illnesses for themselves and their loved ones.

Blessed water is identical in composition and origin to ordinary water itself (tap, well, river), but during the process of water blessing and after the prayer reading, it miraculously acquires beneficial and healing properties.

It is saving for a believer.

Advice! According to tradition, it is customary to drink blessed water on an empty stomach.

How to submit notes for a prayer service

  1. In order for the priest to pray together with the prayer book himself at the prayer service, it is necessary to submit a note to the church shop with the names of those for whom the prayer will be offered.
  2. Each name should be entered in the genitive case (to answer the question of whom? - John, Nina, baby Sergius, young Catherine).
  3. The names should be indicated as those given to a person in the Sacrament of Baptism, their spelling should be church (for example, Dmitry - Dimitri, Ivan - John, Tatiana - Tatiana).
  4. Last name, relationship, citizenship - you do not need to write, you can only indicate the need - the sick person, the warrior, the traveler.
  5. No more than 10 names should be indicated on one form, but if there is a desire to pray for more people, then several notes should be submitted.

Read articles about Orthodoxy:

Akathist is a prayer of praise composed with special care, developing Orthodox Christian daily prayer skills.

Advice! Before starting to read the hymn of praise, it is important to concentrate on prayer, to be sincere, attentive, prayerful, and to lift up the words of the akathist with heartfelt repentance.

The Akathist will help a person get used to prayer as the main part of the service, which is why the Akathist is read in Orthodox churches like a congregational prayer.
